Please attach proof of profession or degree. LibreOffice is the best MS Office alternative. It has almost all MS Word functionality (aside from minor things, definitely no new OneDrive and Office 360 sync options) but it's Free Libre Open Source Software.
It's based on OpenOffice but it's much more improved in terms of stability and functionality. Please try LibreOffice even if you have tried OpenOffice before and didn't like it.
It's compatibility with MS Word is pretty good but in most cases it's the best to export files to PDF to be sure that your documents will look the same regardless of device or software of the viewer. Of course you'll lose editing ability when exporting though. Even MS Word has compatibility problems between versions.
If you are going to write files for yourself use universal ODF format for maintaining editability of your files. There's also WPS Office which is the best MS Office replica and has the biggest MS Office compatibility, but it's recommended less often because it isn't open source and in most times LibreOffice is enough. If you want something more professional than all these office suites, try TeX (LaTeX or preferably XeTeX to have unicode and fonts) as mentioned by but prepare for a bit of learning.
